Visual Description of Artwork
This quilt is divided into three vertical panels. The leftmost panel looks as if it has been inked with black on white, creating the impression of a mostly black, textured surface; the rightmost panel is white, scored by many stitched lines of quilting. A layer of silk creates a pale grey, shimmery sheen on the surface of this panel. In the middle are two images of the gifted ceramic Chinese bowl at the heart of this exhibit, here printed in magenta pink on a white background. Again, a layer of silk creates a rich shiny layer over the pink bowls. Under the bowls are patches patterned with what look like thick brushstrokes of mixed paint, in purples, oranges and browns.
