Originating in Africa, chimpanzees are one of four types of “great ape.” Nearing extinction in many countries due to deforestation and commercial hunting for bushmeat, today both wild and captive chimpanzees are classified as endangered in the U.S.. Although they continue to be used in biomedical research (because they share more that 98% of the DNA with humans), today chimpanzees retired from research in the U.S. are supposed to be placed in sanctuary environments.
