The threatened northern spotted owl is considered an indicator species for the health of the ecosystem it shares with many other creatures. It has been an icon of the movement to protect ancient forests since the 1980s. Its numbers continue to decline in spite of reserve areas set aside to recover owl populations. These areas remain under constant threat by government and logging interests who would like to take back the critical habitat status of large pieces of the forest in order to allow the harvest of trees.4of 4
