The gray wolf’s status as an endangered species in the continental United States is a contentious issue. They were removed from the list of endangered species (as covered by the Endangered Species Act); and therefore lost their protections, in October 2020. Although considered a conservation success story, the move is seen as premature by many—as the gray wolf population has not yet fully recovered its historical range.
